How Fire Department Shift Schedules Work

Most fire departments in the United States operate on some form of rotating shift schedule. Unlike a typical 9-to-5, firefighters work extended shifts (usually 24 or 48 hours at a time) and then get multiple days off before their next tour of duty.

Departments typically divide their personnel into platoons (also called shifts or battalions), usually labeled A, B, and C. Each platoon rotates through the same pattern, offset by one day. So when A shift is on duty, B and C shifts are off, and so on.

The key to any fire shift schedule is the cycle length — the number of days before the pattern repeats. A 24/48 schedule has a 3-day cycle. A 48/96 has a 6-day cycle. A Kelly schedule has a 9-day cycle.

Using This Tool

To generate your calendar, you need one piece of information: a date you know you were on duty. This is your anchor date. The tool uses that anchor to calculate every on-duty and off-duty day forward and backward from there.

Pick your schedule type, enter the anchor date, and choose your platoon color. Then use the month navigation arrows to jump to any month you need. The calendar will highlight your on-duty days and show monthly totals for shifts and hours.

Common Questions

What is a 24/48 fire department schedule?
A 24/48 schedule means 24 hours on duty followed by 48 hours off. It's a 3-day cycle and the most common rotation in the U.S. fire service. You work roughly 10 shifts per month, averaging about 56 hours per week.
What is a 48/96 schedule and why is it popular?
A 48/96 means you work 48 consecutive hours then get 96 hours (4 full days) off. It's gaining traction because the longer off-time gives firefighters better work-life balance, time for second jobs, and less commuting. Total hours per week stay about the same at 56.
What is a Kelly schedule?
Named after Chicago Mayor Edward Kelly, it's a 9-day cycle: work 24, off 24, work 24, off 24, work 24, then off 4 days in a row. Many large metro departments use it. The 4-day break every cycle is a big quality-of-life benefit.
How do I figure out my anchor date?
Just pick any date you know for certain you were on duty. Your last shift works great. The tool calculates every other on/off day from that single reference point. If the calendar doesn't match your actual schedule, double-check that the anchor date and schedule type are correct.
